THE price of a vintage Skegness poster went through the roof at an auction in London
It was thought the image by artist Frank Newbold of a young girl tugging the Jolly Fisherman along by his scarf would fetch between £1,000 and £1,500.
But so keen was the competition at the South Kensington saleroom of Christie’s last Wednesday that the price was bid up to a staggering £3,250 before the hammer finally fell.
The fact it achieved more than double the pre-sale estimate reflects the rising value of posters that were formerly produced in their thousands to promote railway travel.
Another poster in the sale – this time publicising Butlins for Holidays – also did well, fetching £938 against a guide price of £500-£700.
In line with normal auction house practice, the identies of the successful bidders have not been released by Christie’s.
It is not known, therefore, whether the two posters might end up being displayed on walls in Skegness.
